Amycakes Bakery was voted the runner up for best bake shop in mid-Missouri in the 2015 Feast 50. This Q&A was conducted with owner Amy Bloodworth.
Tell us about a few of your most popular items, and how they embody your mission. Several of our cake flavors have become very popular over the past six years. We make a vanilla almond cake that is very popular, and we often make fruit compotes as fillings. Our customers seem to like the raspberry and strawberry compotes the most, and with the vanilla almond cake, it makes a delicious combination! I love that our customers appreciate our made-from-scratch motto, which is our mission – to make everything from scratch, and as delicious as it looks.
What have been some milestones in your career so far? I consider every year that we are open to be a milestone. I’m so grateful that our customers return, and it has been so rewarding to get to form relationships with so many of them.
Clearly your work has resonated with shoppers – what would you attribute this to, and what does it mean to you? I hope that it can be attributed to our products. I would say that each cake that goes out is a labor of love – we love what we do, and we love that customers have embraced our made-from-scratch products. I hope that customers come back because they get good service and a great product. We have one customer who buys a treat every single day, and he often calls back with positive feedback. It makes my day!
What do you hope to see happen next in the local food scene, and why? I love going to local eateries and I am very excited about the local food scene. I love patio dining where we can take our dogs, like the new Sequiota Bikeshop. I like the emphasis on combining family, friends and food, which has always been important to me.
Whether it’s curating an extensive selection on collaborating on a product, where do you get your inspiration? What inspires you and motivates you to do the work that you do? I’ve always loved to bake, and I think it is safe to say that I was inspired by my family. My grandmother always made delicious desserts, and I enjoyed watching her and learning from her. I use several of her recipes at Amycakes. My inspiration now comes from customers and family– they give me support and encouragement each day.
What’s next for you and your work? We have wonderful employees at Amycakes, and we are always thinking of new ideas for flavor combinations or cake décor. I also like to collaborate with my husband, Gabe Bloodworth, and his business, Springfield Hot Glass Studio, to offer hand-blown glass toppers and cake combinations for the holidays.
