Amycakes moving to historic Walnut Street
Movers haul equipment on July 29 from the five-year home of Amycakes LLC.
Downtown bakery Amycakes LLC is planning an early August opening at its newly purchased historic Walnut Street location after nearly five years in operation downtown.
Co-owner Amy Bloodworth said the bakery closed at 308 W. McDaniel St. at the end of business July 26 and is in the process of moving equipment to the 1108 E. Walnut St. residence-style business she purchased for an undisclosed amount through Keller Williams Realty.
"We love being downtown and wanted to be close, but we will have a lot larger space and a little parking lot behind our new spot," Bloodworth said, noting she and her husband moved in upstairs at the location.
She said the new space is roughly three times the size of the 800-square-foot McDaniel Street location, which she leased from Jason Murray.
Amycakes, which opened in August 2009 after Bloodworth purchased The Bakehouse from Barb Baker, said she is currently waiting for plumbing to be installed and for the city to approve the kitchen as commercial. The retail space already was zoned commercial, she said.
In the new spot, Bloodworth and three other employees - with plans to hire more - will begin to take on additional orders. On McDaniel Street, Amycakes took, on average, 50 cake orders a week ranging from cinnamon rolls and cupcakes to wedding cakes, Bloodworth said. On Walnut Street, Amycakes again will offer individual sweets for purchase on site, a service the company discontinued in early 2012.
"When we have more room to bake and decorate, we're definitely going to try take more," Bloodworth said of orders coming in.
